Salt Boat
Our elegantly designed Salt Storage Container for the Kitchen Counter
The Salt Boat is our take on a venerable salt pig, a masterfully designed and extremely utilitarian salt storage container. Our Salt Boat is by far is the most used kitchen utensil that I own. And if you don’t already have one, most people usually ask why do I need one?
My kids are 8 and 10 and I’m teaching them both how to cook. The first lesson right after wash your hands was mise en place or everything in its place. Trying to start out right, I wanted for them to understand that they had to have what they needed, when they needed it, and where they needed it.
And like it or not, everyone cooks with salt, it’s one of the most essential ingredients in just about every dish. So all of that being said, you’re going to need salt when you cook. A good chef shouldn’t waste time or motion to search for a box of salt in the cupboard to season a steak or salt water for pasta. Salt should be close enough at hand to grab a pinch or a handful as quickly as possible. That’s why you need our Salt Boat.
Traditional Pigs have been around forever and you can find all different types, usually made of wood or ceramic. They’re more often than not kind of folksy or whimsical and suit a certain style and it’s fairly easy to find one shaped in the form of a porcine cookie jar. Or you could just use a plastic tub or small bowl.
When you’re working fast in the kitchen and have 4 saute pans on the stove or rushing to finish a few dishes at the same time, you want a device that isn’t going to move.
The Salt Boat is a 100mm (3.9″) square block of solid aircraft grade aluminum and weighs in at a scale tipping 1kg (2.2lbs). It’s precision CNC machined, not cast as a lesser product would be, and then anodized for a hard wearing surface finish.
While the form factor of the Salt Boat might seem deceptively simple, we deliberately made it as heavy and solid as we could, and giving it a low profile and center of gravity to prevent any tipping or spilling during use.
The wide mouth of the Salt Boat, which facilitates easy and fast access, is a machined hemisphere holding over 1 cup of kosher salt. For most home chefs, this quantity should last quite a while before refilling.
The Salt Boat is sold on its own, or as part of a set with the equally amazing Standard Pepper Mill. Save up to $50 when you buy both together.
