71mm burrs for the HG-1 Prime? A strong feeling of déjà vu.

When we introduced the original HG-1 in 2012, we offered a choice of 71mm or 83mm conical burrs.

Pictured here is HG-1 No. 1 of 1, the very first HG-1 ever made, fitted with its original 71mm burr set.

Back then, no one was particularly interested in the 71mm. Everyone thought bigger was better, so the 83mm won out.

Fast forward to 2026...

No joke but the timing's been serendipitous. That picture is of the kitchen counter in my office. You can see a pile of 71mm burrs raw and TiN coated. Was pondering what I was gonna do with them.

Then I get a barrage of email from some very persuasive pre-order customers. After some interesting discussions on Discord, I decided to have another run at this :)

Just because I ain't got anything better to do, and I'm a glutton for punishment, here's the Hot-off-the-presses CAD for a new 71mm carrier for the HG-1 Prime.

If there's any chance of getting this into the current production run, I need everyone's input pronto, please. The more interest we have this accessory the better chance there is of getting it made. On my end, I'm gonna work hard to keep the price down on this one guys.

Three questions:

1. Obsidian or Panda?
All black or black and silver?

2. Coated or uncoated burrs?
TiN-coated or traditional uncoated Mazzer burrs?

3. BYOB (Bring Your Own Burrs)?
Just the carrier so you can supply your own burrs, or a complete assembly with burrs from Mazzer or our manufacturer?

Nothing is locked in yet. This is a chance to help shape what we might build.

Let me know in the comments.

The HG-1 Prime - Panda Color

The original HG-1 was introduced in 2012. Fourteen years later, the Prime is the next evolution of that design.

The Panda combines a black frame and gearbox with silver components, giving the grinder a very different look from the all-black Obsidian.

While the overall design remains familiar, almost everything has been revisited. We've developed a new custom 83mm TiN-coated conical burr set, redesigned the gearbox with a 2.5:1 drive ratio, and made changes throughout the grinder.

The goal was never to make something completely different. It was to take the original HG-1 and make it better.

The key to stability. Without the commitment.

Precision-machined from solid stainless steel, our HG-1 Prime Base Key securely anchors your grinder to your countertop while allowing it to slide off in seconds, without tools.

Choose between 3M VHB adhesive mounting or a mechanical through-counter installation.

Secure when you need it. Removable when you don't.

This is where the HG-1 started.
On the left is the gearbox from one of the original HG-1 prototypes. In retrospect, it’s hilariously over-engineered. Machined aluminum, substantial bevel gears, ground stainless-steel shafts, and a 1:1 gear ratio.
Basically, built like a tank.
At the time, that was partly the point. We weren’t particularly interested in figuring out how little material we could get away with. We wanted something rigid, precise and mechanical—and something that felt like it would still be working long after we were gone.
On the right is the gearbox from the HG-1 Prime. Smaller, more refined, and with a 2.5:1 gear ratio that provides considerably more mechanical advantage at the handle.
The basic idea hasn’t changed.
We don’t change things simply because they’re old. If something works, it stays. When we find a genuinely better way of doing something, we change it.
Thirteen years separate these two gearboxes.
There’s a lot of HG-1 history sitting on that table.
